Heading into last Monday’s conference baseball finale in Elmwood, Elk Mound need a win and a little help to grab a share of the Dunn-St. Croix’ Large Division crown.
The Mounders did just that May 23 as they whitewashed the home-standing Raiders 13-0 for their sixth straight victory. Unfortunately Elk Mound did not get the help it hoped for as Durand survived a road test in Alma, beating a stubborn
Pepin/Alma squad 6-3 for the outright title.
The Mounders, who finished the conference season at 11-2 compared to the Panthers 12-1 mark and in second in as many years, wrapped up their regular season bill as they split a pair of one-run, non-conference contests against Eau Claire area schools.
A day after throttling Elmwood, Elk Mound stayed on the road as it traveled to Carson Park to take on Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran returning with a 2-1 victory. Two days later, the Mounders host Altoona in the regular season finale for both teams and fell 1-0 in the Thursday, May 26 contest.
The loss to Altoona snapped the Mounders seven-game win streak and put their season mark at 17-3.
Elk Mound, who was able to host Altoona due to a first-round regional bye, hosted Boyceville in a D3 regional semifinal game yesterday (May 31). The Bulldogs upset the Mounder 1-0 when the pair last met back on May 5.
Elk Mound extended win streak to six games with it’s five-inning, 13-0 road shut out against Elmwood Monday, May 23.
The Mounders’ junior pitcher Trey Mohr went the distance and allowed just one hits and a walk to earn the victory. Mohr struck out 13 batters in the shortened game. The victory was Mohr sixth in seven starts.
Elk Mound was in complete control throughout the game as it started fast and never looked back.
The Mounders scored in every inning of the game and started the game out by scoring three in the top of the first to get things going. They added to their lead in the second by pushing one more across the plate. The Mounders continued to pour on the runs with two more in the third and three more in the fourth.
Elk Mound pushed the lead to 13 with four runs in the top of the fifth to end the game.
The Mounders tallied thirteen hits game and drew four walks. Collecting hits for Elk Mound were Trey Mohr with a home run, senior Alex Hollister with three including two doubles and a triple, junior Hunter Adleman, senior Cole Tyman with three including a triple, senior Grant Kjellberg, sophomore Ethan Kjellberg with two including a double, and junior Dane Lew including a double and triple.
Eau Claire Immanuel
The Elk Mound baseball team escaped Carson Park Tuesday, May 24 with a 2-1 win over Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran.
The Mounders started off the game by scoring right away in the top of the first inning. They scored their second and final run in the second inning.
Lancers pitching shut down the Mounders offensive for the rest of the game.
But runs were at premium for both teams.
Eau Claire Immanuel finally broke into the score column in the bottom of the fifth inning with its only run of the game.
Elk Mound managed just three hits in the game and only drew one walk. The Mounders also struck out six times in the game.
Recording the hits for Elk Mound was junior Trey Mohr, senior Cole Tyman with a double, and junior Dane Lew.
Out of the two runs of the Mounders scored on the afternoon only one came from an RBI. Cole Tyman came through for the lone RBI for Elk Mound to add to his season total.
Sophomore Ethan Kjellberg who pitched five innings for the Mounders to get the win. Kjellberg allowed one run on six hits on the afternoon and only struck out one. Senior Brandon Bohl came in the game in the sixth for two innings of relief. He allowed three hits and struck out four in his short time on the mound.
The Elk Mound baseball team hosted Altoona Thursday, May 26 in the regular season finale and came up on the short end of a 1-0 score.
The Mounders had two pitchers throw in the loss with senior Brandon Bohl going five strong innings. Bohl gave up two hits and issued one walk while striking out seven Altoona batters. Junior Trey Mohr came in for two inning of work and issued one walk on no hits, but gave up the only run of the game that was unearned. Mohr also picked up the loss on the afternoon.
The Mounders were held in check by a good Altoona team that only allowed three hits to the Mounders and three walks while striking out seven.
Collecting hits for the Mounders were Trey Mohr, senior Cole Tyman, and sophomore Ethan Kjellberg. All of the Mounders’ hits went for singles.
Drawing a walk for Elk Mound to get on base was Mohr, senior Grant Kjellberg, and junior Dane Lew.
