Elk Mound track scores well at regionals

BLOOMER — The Elk Mound track and field teams traveled to nearby Bloomer on Monday, May 23 for the WIAA Division 2 Regional competition.

The Mounder boys placed fourth at the meet while the  girls finished fifth. Black River Falls took home first place for the girls with 115 points and Chetek/Weyerhaeuser won the boys’ title with 122 points.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to the sectional meet held Thursday, May 26 in Black River Falls.


The Elk Mound boys took home a fourth place finish after tallying 88.50 points to open the WIAA track and field tournament series at regionals in Bloomer.

The Mounders qualified nine boys and relay teams for the sectional meet in Black River Falls Thursday. Elk Mound also took home a pair of first-place finishes with their relay teams as both the 4×200 and 4×100-meter relay teams copped titles.

The 4×200 relay team had a winning time of 1:33.25 and consisted of junior Noah Zurbuchen, senior Jordan VanSchoonhoven, junior Tyler Sahm and senior Ben Mack. The 4×100-meter relay team finished in a time of :44.82 and  was made up of Noah Zurbuchen, Jordan VanSchoonhoven, Tyler Sahm and Preston Eppers.

The boys’ 4×400-meter relay team finished fourth on the afternoon with a time of 3:36.11. This team consisted of junior George Friberg, junior Hunter Johnson, senior Chase Morris and junior anchor Chandler Schreiber.

Sophomore Jake Johnson finished in the top three in his two events. Johnson took second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of :15.49 and third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of :42.22 and advanced to sectionals in both hurdling events.

Elk Mound had two boys finish in the top four in the 100-meter dash. Noah Zurbuchen finished second with a time of :11.35 and Tyler Sahm took fourth with a time of :11.74.

The Mounders also sent two boys to sectionals in the field events. Chandler Schreiber finished fourth in the pole vault after clearing a height of 11’ 6” and senior Aaron Maves finished third in the discus with a distance of 134’ 4”.


The Lady Mounders, led by a pair of first-place finishes, took fifth on the afternoon with a total of 92.50 points. Elk Mound qualified for the sectional meet in eight events.

The 4×800-meter relay team finished first with a winning time of 10:52.36. This team consisted of freshman Brook Plaszcz, freshman Alana Plaszcz, freshman Victoria Fasbender and sophomore Claudia Paul.

Junior Elizabeth Fasbender captured the Mounders’ other top finish as she ran a 12:46.60 to win the 3200-meter run.
Sophomore Callie Nyren took home a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of :27.99. Alana Plaszcz finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.77 and Brook Plaszcz took fourth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:52.89. All three earned sectional berths.

The 4×100-meter relay team was the second relay team to move on to sectionals with a third-place finish with a time of 53.45. This team was made up of junior Kaitlyn Baier, sophomore Maddie Jenson, Callie Nyren and senior McKenna McVey.

The Lady Mounders also sent two girls in the field events to the next round. Junior Mikayla Solberg finished fourth in the discus throwing a distance of 95’,11” and senior Taylor Deling took fourth in the shot put with a distance of 32’ 1”.
