by Samuel Ripp

COLFAX — Seniors Dempsey Fogarty, Marianne Scharlau, Hunter Lieffort and Isaac Lee along with three relay teams will be representing Colfax at this weekend’s WIAA State Track and Field Championships in LaCrosse.

The senior quartet and relays qualified for state after finishing fourth or better in the 2016 WIAA Division 3 sectional meet held Thursday, May 26 in Colfax. The top four place winners in each event earn berths at the state meet.

With more than 30 teams competing in this year’s sectional meet, the Colfax girls’ and boys’ showed well as both finished ninth.

Shell Lake bested runner-up Eau Claire Regis by ten points to claim the girls title. The Lakers finished with 62 points compared to 52 tallied by the Ramblers. Unity won the boys’ sectional crown in convincing fashion as it piled up 86 points to double up Chippewa Falls McDonell, who came in second with 43 points.

Led by the senior tandem of Dempsey Fogarty and Marianne Scharlau, the Colfax girls had a strong showing at the Sectional meet they qualified in four events for the state track and field meet.

Dempsey Fogarty continued her great senior season by qualifying in a pair of individual events and as a member of a relay team. Fogarty took fourth in the long jump with a distance of 16’ 6” and placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.17 to earn a state berth in both events. The one event she participated in, but was unable to make it to state, was the 200-meter dash where she finished eighth with a time of 28.32.

Fogarty will also be competing in the 4×800 meter relay along with fellow senior Courtney Dressel, junior Abbagail Schotter and freshman Erica Kallstrom qualified for state with a second-place finish in Thursday’s sectional meet. The squad took silver in a time of 10:06.42.

Senior Marianne Scharlau earned a trip to LaCrosse after throwing 109’ 10” to finish as the runner-up in the discus. Scharlau, who by her own standards had an off day throwing the shot put, narrowly missed qualifying in the event after she placed fifth with a heave of 33’ 1”.

Erica Kallstrom, who is going to state with the 4×800-meter relay team, just missed out on going to state in the 3,200-meter run with a fifth place finish. Kallstrom had a time of 12:17.60.

The boys also had a great outing at the sectional track meet and will also be sending four events to the state meet. Two relay teams qualified and two field events are also going.

The 4×200-meter relay team took second with a blazing time of 1:36.79 to continue their season. This team was made up of sophomore Adam Pretasky, senior Tucker Hovde, senior Kedar Davis and senior Jacob Steinke.

The 4×100-meter relay team also took home a second place finish with almost all of the same boys as the 4×200 team.

This team was made up of: Adam Pretasky, Jacob Steinke, Kedar Davis, and freshman Jeremy Artist. The team finished with a time of 45.81 on the afternoon.

The Viking boys’ other two state qualifiers came in the field events. Senior Hunter Lieffort finished third in the pole vault clearing a height of 12’ 3” and senior Issac Lee qualified in the triple jump. Lee finished third in the event flying a distance of 41’ 8”.

Tucker Hovde, who is already going to state with the 4×200-meter relay team, looked to go in the 1,600-meter run. Hovde could not make that happen, however, as he finished tenth in the event with a time of 4:51.83.

The WIAA State Track and Field Championships will be held this Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4 at Memorial Stadium on the UW-LaCrosse campus. Division 3 competition is set to get underway at 3 p.m. Friday and will continue on Saturday.
