Elk Mound wins Dunn-St. Croix – Large with win over Colfax

ELK MOUND — The Elk Mound girls’ softball team clinched a share of its second straight Dunn-St. Croix championship last Monday, May 16 at home when it ten-runned rival Colfax.

The Lady Mounders outhit their Vikings’ counterparts 10 to 2 en route to a 11-1, five-inning triumph. Elk Mound, who had won 20-8 in Colfax back on April 25, earned the regular season sweep with last Monday’s victory.

The game was scoreless through the first two innings, but in the bottom of the third, the Lady Mounders broke through a pair of runs. Sophomore Allison Lindquist brought in both Elk Mound runs with a double.

The Vikings answered back with a run in the top of the fourth as senior Lakken Meredith belted an RBI single.

But the Lady Mounders took control in the bottom half of the inning as they batted around and scored eight runs to take a 10-1 lead.

Elk Mound finished the game in the fifth inning when junior Emily Ausman knocked home junior Karie Jo Nigon with the game-ending run.

Senior Abbey Olsen pitched a complete game for the Lady Mounders only giving up one run on two hits and struck out ten Vikings.

Elk Mound collected ten hits with Olsen getting a hit, Karie Jo Nigon had two including a double, Ausman had a pair, Lindquist collected three hits and freshman Abby Curry and junior Elizabeth Bauer had one each..

Out of the eleven runs the Lady Mounders scored, seven of them came from RBIs. Adding to their RBI total on the year were Olsen with two, Ausman, Lindquist with two, and senior Jade Sorenson.

Colfax sophomore Tamara Huffman took the loss on the mound.

The Lady Vikings could only manage two hits in the game and they both came in the fourth inning when they scored their lone run. Sophomore Mikaela Leibfried hit a double and scored on Lakken Meredith’s RBI single.

Elk Mound only has two games remaining on the season both of which are conference games. The Mounders were in Spring Valley Tuesday, May 17 and hosted Pepin/Alma on Thursday, May 19 to wrap the season.

The Lady Vikings finished the season at home on Thursday, May 19 against Glenwood City.
