Lady Mounders’ bats come alive late in win

ELK MOUND — The Elk Mound softball team was at home on Tuesday, May 10 to take on Independence/Gilmanton and won 13-3 in five innings.

Elk Mound started out with junior Karie Jo Nigon on the mound for the first three innings of play and then switched it up in the fourth with senior Abbey Olsen coming in to take over for the rest of the game. Nigon allowed two runs in the short time she was out there on five hits. She also struck out three in three innings.

Independence/Gilmanton struck first in the game, which is unusual for the Lady Mounders to be trailing early. They pushed two across in the second inning to grab the early lead. Elk Mound would get one run back in the third after Karie Jo Nigon came around to score after hitting a triple and junior Emily Ausman brought her home. Elk Mound would grab the lead in the fourth after scoring three in the inning on two hits and a walk. Independence/Gilmanton tried to fight back in the fifth, but could only manage one run in the inning to make it 4-3. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lady Mounders would shut the door and end it in five. They scored nine runs in the inning to end it after the ten run rule. They had six hits in the inning and reached base two more times on errors on the defense. Knocking in the two runs that put them up ten was sophomore Madysen Borofka with a single down the left field line.

The Lady Mounders collected nine hits on the afternoon and the girls that added to their season total were: Abbey Olsen with two, Karie Jo Nigon with two including a triple, junior Emily Ausman, sophomore Allison Lindquist, freshman Abby Curry, junior Elizabeth Bauer, and Madysen Borofka.

Out of the thirteen runs that the Lady Mounders scored, nine of them came off of RBIs. Picking up RBIs on the afternoon included: Karie Jo Nigon with three, Emily Ausman with two, Allison Lindquist, senior Jade Sorenson, and Madysen Borofka with two.

After the victory, the Lady Mounders will be on the road Thursday, May 12 to take on Mondovi and then will be back home on Friday, May 13 to play Bloomer. Elk Mound is still undefeated in conference and will look to finish out the season still perfect with only a couple games remaining.
