Colfax drops a heartbreaker at Plum City
PLUM CITY — The Lady Vikings softball team could not handle Plum City in the late innings and lost a 5-4 heartbreaker in the season opener held Thursday, April 7 at Plum City High School.
Colfax started off the game right by scoring an early run in the top of the first inning and then added to it a couple innings later to extend its lead to two.
Plum City would answer back in the bottom half of the fourth inning by scoring three runs and taking the lead for the first time in the game. The Blue Devils, however, did not hold that lead for long.
In the top of the sixth, the Lady Vikings drove in two more runs to put them back on top and only six outs away from a victory.
It turned out that a one run lead was not enough in the last couple innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, and with Plum City trailing by a run, the homestanding Blue Devils found the magic to pull out two runs and walk off with a victory.
This was the first game of the year for Colfax and started off the young season with a 0-1 loss. They will have a lot more opportunities to learn from their mistakes in this game.
Despite the loss, a couple of Colfax bats came alive in the game. Senior Lakken Meredith went two-for-three with a run while also picking up her first RBI of the year. Freshman Kaitlyn Field saw her first action on the varsity field and collected two hits and picked up her first RBI of her high school career.
The other RBI of the night went to sophomore Hailey Durand who added a hit to her game.
Two pitchers were on the mound for the Lady Vikings in this contest. Sophomore Tamara Huffman pitched three strong innings only giving up one hit but two runs. She also added eight strikeouts. Meredith pitched the other four innings and also took the loss on the game. She gave up six hits and four earned runs.
The Lady Vikings will have plenty of time to get back on track after a hard loss in the first game of the year.
Colfax will enjoy a four-game homestand which got underway against Durand Monday, April 11. Menomonie came to town the following day.
The Vikings, weather permitting of course, are scheduled to host Boyceville this Thursday and Spring Valley next Monday, April 18.The Vikings then hit the road for a pair of games, playing at Menomonie on Tuesday, April 19 and in Mondovi on Thursday, April 21.
