Vikings let lead slip away in loss to Edgar Wildcats
COLFAX — Holding a five point advantage at halftime wasn’t enough for the Colfax boys as they relinquished the lead late in the second half and lost 49-47 to Edgar in a non-conference game Saturday, February 13 at home.
After falling behind 11-0 to start the contest, the Vikings got on track with Kedar Davis giving the Wildcats fits by scoring 17 of the Vikings 25 points in the half. Davis started with a trey, scored from close range then rattled off three more triples and finished with another deuce. Brett Prince scored from long range and short range and Isaac Lee added his own shot from behind the arc and a free throw as Colfax was up 25-20 at the intermission.
Things were looking even brighter for Colfax when Aliymu Davis hit from the top of the key and Prince canned a trey for a 30-20 lead. However, the Wildcats showed why they are leading the Marawood North Conference at 10-0 and were 16-2 overall as they began to chip away at the Vikings’ lead.
After an Edgar trey, Kedar Davis answered with his fifth of the game. But that was in turn answered by the Wildcats followed by a put back to cut the Colfax lead to 33-28. Aliymu Davis swiped the ball away and scored then followed the same pattern a minute later for a 37-28 Colfax advantage.
But this Wildcat team has some pretty big boys including four over 6’4 and they used that height advantage to score in the paint twice.
Prince canned another trey and when Kedar Davis assisted his brother for another deuce, it certainly appeared the Vikings were in control with a 42-34 lead midway through the second half.
Seven straight Wildcat points cut that Colfax lead to a single point at 42-41 and after Kedar Davis was called for a charge for his fourth foul, Edgar went ahead on a shot inside, and with a free throw they were up 44-42.
Aliymu Davis took a long baseball pass and slid in for a layup and was fouled, and his free toss put the Vikings back up 45-44 with 4:55 left.
The Wildcats scored on an offensive rebound to regain the lead but they left the door open when they missed on several free throw attempts in the last four minutes. Kedar Davis ended up fouling out with 2:34 left but after one of those Wildcat misses, Prince put the Vikings up 47-46 on a slick drive in the lane with 1:37 to go.
Edgar scored from the paint to take the lead back and Aliymu Davis departed the game the same way his brother did.
Two more Wildcat misses at the charity stripe were followed by a made one and with six seconds left, Colfax was down 49-47 and had the ball. Trying to get a clear shot off wasn’t an easy task however, and a three point attempt couldn’t find the mark and neither did an attempt at a putback from the rebound.
“I thought we played a very good all-around game against a good team,” coach Garrett Maas said. “We moved the ball well but foul trouble didn’t help us any. We struggle against teams with big players and Edgar had plenty of them,” he added.
Colfax knocked down nine triples in the game and were 2 for 5 from the charity stripe while Edgar scored 34 of their points from close range and were just 3 for 12 at the stripe.
