Low scoring game results in win for Colfax girls over Spring Valley

SPRING VALLEY — The Spring Valley school district must have forgotten to pay their heating bill for the month because it was mighty cold in the gym – from a shooting perspective anyway – for both the Colfax and Spring Valley girls’ teams when the Vikings went there to play a conference game Feb. 4. Despite scoring their lowest point total in a winning effort this season, the Vikings pulled out a 38-26 win over the Cardinals with freshman Savannah Henricks completing a double-double and a career high 18 points and 11 rebounds for the night.

“Our ability to defend made up for an inconsistent night on offense,” Colfax coach Joe Doucette said.

The Vikings led 20-11 at the intermission as Ally Heidorn had all eight of her points in the half with five free throws and a trey but no other player had more then four points. Henricks was the only real offensive threat in the second half when she came up with 14 points on four deuces, a triple and three free tosses. But the Vikings defense shut the Cardinals offense down which included holding the conference’s leading scorer Becky Fesenmaier, who averages 17 points a game, to just 11 points for the night. Colfax shot just 50 percent from the foul stripe at 9 for 18 while the Cardinals also shot 50 percent but were 2 for 4.

“We had stretches where we played pretty well but just did not shoot well,” Doucette said. “We had too many turnovers and were not persistent on offense but we hung in on defense to get the win. With five regular season games left, any win is a good win for us right now,” he added.
