Lady Vikings back on track with win over Elmwood-Plum City

ELMWOOD — After having their 55 conference game winning streak halted by Elk Mound the previous week, the Colfax girls’ hoops team began a new streak when they traveled to Elmwood Jan. 12 and came up with a 47-26 win over the Elmwood-Plum City Wolves.

It wasn’t a pretty game offensively early on for the Vikings as they struggled to get the ball in the basket, but after being stuck on the 14 point mark for quite a while, Alyssa Dachel and Ally Heidorn each drained a triple near the end of the half and the usual Colfax stifling defense shut the Wolves down, allowing them to hold a 23-10 advantage at the break.

“We had open shots early on but were just missing them,” Colfax coach Joe Doucette said. “And we weren’t chasing any loose balls down.”

The offensive spark carried over into the second half as Megan Schleusner scored all seven of her points in the game on 4 of 4 free throws and a triple, Heidorn connected for a pair of deuces and a trey, Dempsey Fogarty added all five of her game points on a free toss and a couple of short range shots and Savannah Henricks dropped in a bucket and a free throw. And yes, folks, it looks like the Prince name is going to be printed in the sports page writeups for a few more years as freshman Hailey Prince scored her first two varsity points by hitting a pair of free throws.

“We moved the ball pretty well the second half and had several nice passes,” Doucette said. “Both Savannah Henricks and Megan Schleusner came off the bench and Henricks had a solid game on both sides of the court.  And Schleusner came up big herself in the second half,” he added.

Heidorn was the only Viking to score in double digits with 12 points. E-PC’s leading scorer Cheyanne Catura, who averages 13 points a game, was held to two points by Fogarty, the Colfax defensive standout.
