Colfax girls maul Mondovi

MONDOVI – It was a completely different story from their first game of the season to the second as the Colfax girls’ basketball team used nine three point shots and a devouring defense to win their first game 70-38 on the road at Mondovi Dec. 3. The win also happened to be a conference win and after a 61-25 loss to state ranked Hayward nine days earlier, it was a much needed one for the young Vikings.

Colfax went up 11-0 before allowing the Buffaloes to score and they continued to pull away taking a 32-19 lead at the half. Ally Heidorn had nine of those points while Alyssa Dachel contributed with six on a pair of triples.

The Vikings upped the lead to 41-23 midway through the second half and after Dachel canned her fourth trey of the game with six minutes left it was a 54-32 lead. Hailey Durand-Christianson finished off the Colfax scoring with a bucket and a free toss with a minute left for the lop sided win.

“It was a long nine days waiting to play after the Hayward loss,” coach Joe Doucette said. “We had a ton of energy, moved the ball well and made shots. We were much stronger with the ball and had less turnovers in this game. We have to put it in perspective, however. Mondovi is young like us and are rebuilding while Hayward is a very good team.”

The only senior on the Colfax team, Dempsey Fogarty led all scorers with 18 points and according to Doucette was all over the court on offense and defense. Heidorn added 13 points and Dachel 12. The Vikings’ downfall was their free throw shooting as they hit just 7 of 23 from the stripe.
