Viking girls blown away by Hurricanes

HAYWARD — With one of the youngest teams coach Joe Doucette has ever put on the floor, the Colfax girls’ basketball team was no match for the Hayward Hurricanes when they traveled to Hayward to play the Heart O’ North Conference champions Nov. 24. The Hurricanes outplayed the Vikings in all aspects of the game and won 61-25 in a game that was rescheduled from Dec. 14.

It probably wasn’t the best team for the Vikings to face in their opening game since the Hurricanes return several players from a team that ended their season a year ago in the semi-final game of the state tournament. Colfax struggled with the trapping defense put on by Hayward which caused plenty of turnovers on their part, resulting in a 33-8 Hurricane lead at the intermission.

Ally Heidorn scored six of her team high seven points and Dempsey Fogarty came up with all five of her points in the second half but the Vikings were outscored 28-17 to lead to the final score. Freshman Alyssa Dachel knocked down her first career three point shot in the game, putting her 103 behind older sister Dannielle who graduated last year.

“This is one of the better, if not best Hayward teams we have faced,” Doucette said. “They are big, skilled and deep and were better than us in all phases of the game. Our only hope was to try harder than they did and be fundamentally strong but they were better in these areas too. Defensively, we were solid at times but we were timid and very weak with the ball on offense. The list of weaknesses we have to work on is overwhelming right now but this team will improve a lot by the end of the season,” he added.
