Lady Mounders win one, lose one in opening week

Getting a jump on the new season, the Elk Mound girls’ basketball team beat a pretty good Stanley-Boyd team 61-46 at home Nov. 17, then two days later lost a close one to the Division 4 state runner up Fall Creek team 59-56 in Fall Creek.

Stanley-Boyd

The Orioles finished 16-8 a year ago and tied for third in the always competitive Western Cloverbelt Conference. They also boast a Division I recruit in Jamie Reit who had just signed her letter of intent to play for UW-Milwaukee earlier in the day. The Mounders used balanced scoring which included seven players putting points up in the first half as they held a 34-23 advantage at the halftime break. Sarah Winchester scored nine of those points while Elizabeth Fasbender and Morgan Radtke both collected six, Allie Weber and Megan Krall had four each while Kami King had the only three pointer of the game for the team and McKenna McVey added a pair of free throws.

McVey came to life in the second half, scoring on five buckets and a free throw while Fasbender added 10 points which included five of eight free throws. King’s six points and a Radtke free toss helped put the game away. Reit managed to score 19 of the Orioles’ points but didn’t get a lot of help from her teammates.

Fasbender led the Mounders with 15 points and McVey added 13. As a team, the Mounders hit 16 of 23 free throws while S-B was 15 of 19.

“We played well defensively with McVey and Fasbender doing a nice job on Reit,” coach Jordan Kongshaug said. “We had excellent play from our bench but we could have done better converting turnovers into points. But overall, it was a good start for our team.”

Fall Creek

The Crickets have several players back from last year’s team that brought home the silver ball, but the Mounder girls showed they were able to play with them from early on. King scored the first five Mounder points and after Fasbender added a bucket off a rebound, McVey came up with three short range shots for a 13-9 lead. Fall Creek knotted it up before Krall and Weber both scored for a 17-14 Mounder lead but the Mounders committed their seventh team foul with just over 10:00 left in the half. Elk Mound got sloppy with the ball and turned it over several times, resulting in points by the Crickets which led to them taking a 34-22 lead at the intermission.

The Mounders fell behind by as much as 15 points early in the second half, down 45-30 before Winchester went on a run and hit three short range shots to cut the deficit to 45-36. But after getting down by 13 a few minutes later, 51-38, the Mounders used an offensive surge which included four deuces and a free toss by McVey with a fast break lay up by Winchester in the mix, and suddenly, it was a two point game with Elk Mound down 51-49 with a little over four minutes to play. McVey fouled out right after her scoring streak however, and the Mounders missed on a couple of three point attempts. Down 54-49, King scored on an offensive rebound but the Crickets countered with a fast break lay up. Elk Mound  missed two more shots from long range before Fasbender came up with a steal and dished the ball to Krall for a lay up and it was a one possession game at 56-53 with 40 seconds left. After the Mounders misfired on another triple attempt, their 20th of the game, King finally knocked one down to make it 57-56 for the Crickets but Fall Creek scored and forced a Mounder turnover with three seconds left to take the win.

McVey led the Mounders in the scoring department with 19 points with Winchester and King contributing 12 each. Whitney Folkers and Olivia Burghardt each score 17 points for the Crickets.
