COLFAX — After dropping their only conference match to Colfax a week earlier, the Elk Mound volleyball team pulled themselves together to take a three set win at home over Spring Valley Oct. 13. Both teams had just one loss in D-SC action and the Mounder win in the final conference match of the season for both teams gave them sole possession of second place while the Cardinals finished third.
Elk Mound stormed out of the gates quickly to take the first set 25-10, but let up somewhat in set number two as they maintained just a one to two point lead most of the way. The Cardinals kept pace throughout before the Mounders came up with some big points for a 25-23 win. They played from behind most of the third set, tying the game on several occasions only to fall behind again, but after getting the score to 23-24 the girls dug deep to come up with three straight points for a 26-24 win.
“Spring Valley is a very competitive team,” Mounder coach Sam Weix said.”They played defense well and their setter caught us off guard a few times.”
With seedings now in place for the WIAA tournament, Elk Mound was given a number three seed and will host Osseo-Fairchild, the number six seed Tuesday, Oct. 20. If the Mounders win, they will play the winner of the Fall Creek-Whitehall match.
