Lady Viking struggle at Altoona invite

ALTOONA — After winning a pair of conference matches earlier in the week, the Colfax volleyball team lost all four of their matches against some pretty tough teams at the Altoona Invitation Saturday, Oct.10.

The Vikings played Cameron and lost 20-25, 14-25 as the team had just 11 kills in the two sets with two each from five different players. Bryana Buchanan led the team in digs with 28, Megan Schleusner added 17 and Erin Nellessen 13 while Lakken Meredith was the assist leader with 11.

Colfax took Chippewa Falls to three sets before losing 16-25, 25-14, 15-17 as Meredith had five kills and 16 assists, Marianne Scharlau slammed five kills and blocked three shots, Serena Secraw added four kills and 12 digs, Buchanan finished with 21 digs and Nellessen collected 14 digs.

The match against Immanuel Lutheran also went to three sets with Colfax losing 18-25, 25-16, 7-15. Scharlau finished with nine of the teams 19 kills while Meredith blocked a pair of shots and came up with 19 assists. The back row was kept busy as Buchanan dug the ball 36 times, Schleusner 16 times and Secraw 13.

Colfax lost to Altoona, one of the best teams in the state 16-25, 14-25 as Scharlau came up with half of her team’s kills with seven. Buchanan added seven digs and Meredith 12 assists.

“It was not a good showing for us this late in the season,” coach Pam Meredith said. “We might have been mentally exhausted from two big conference matches earlier in the week. We now need to focus on our final conference game at Elmwood and prepare for the regional tournament,” she added.
