Vikings and Mounders compete at Knudtson Invite

FALL CREEK — All four Colfax and Elk Mound cross country teams raced in near perfect weather conditions at the Knudtson Invitational held in Fall Creek Saturday, Sept. 12.

The Viking girls came home with a championship while the boys were second, and the Elk Mounds girls were fifth and their boys were ninth. There were eight complete teams in the girls’ race and nine in the boys’ competition.

Freshman Erica Kallstrom placed second behind Flambeau’s Rachel Lawton, but scored first place team points because Flambeau did not have a complete team. Kallstrom ran a time of 21:11, behind Lawtons time of 20:28. Courtney Dressel followed Kallstrom in fourth place at 21:35 and Dempsey Fogarty was on her heels for fifth in 21:52. Abbagail Schotter came in at 11th in 23:04, Hailey Prince was 18th in 24:04 and Ally Heidorn was 33rd in a time of 25:39.

“After having some time off from competing, we had some good workouts,” coach Joe Doucette said. “We finished ahead of Glenwood City who are the defending conference and sectional champions but they are missing a few runners and will be tough when they get healthy.”

Tucker Hovde led the Viking boys with a third place finish in a time of 18:29 with Dan Lau of Immanuel Lutheran crossing the finish line first in 17:37. Zac Arvold followed Hovde in seventh at 19:03, Brett Prince was 13th in 19:16 and Jacob Larson was further back in 27th at 20:08. Jelani Smit had his best race of the year, earning team points as the fifth runner in for Colfax in 31st place at 20:14, Ike Lee was 35th in 20:31 and Brady Simonson was 39th at 20:43.

“Hovde is tough right now and is a lot faster than last year,” Doucette said. “After Arvold’s seventh place we were solid. The good thing with the boys is they can get a lot better. They have a lot of potential and may be deeper than our girls.”
