Elk Mound spikers compete at Sprawl, Cadott Triangular

Members of the Elk Mound volleyball team had a chance to hone their skills by playing seven games at the Menomonie Sprawl held at UW-Stout Aug. 28-29, then competed against host team Cadott and Gilman in a triangular meet Sept. 1.

Playing nine matches in a four day span gave first year head coach Samantha Weix the opportunity to see what her players could do and figure out a starting lineup when conference play begins in a few weeks.

Menomonie Sprawl

The Mounders finished 2-2 in pool play in Friday’s round, defeating Turtle Lake 2-0 and Athens 2-1, but lost to Division I school Rice Lake 2-0 and Lourdes Academy of Oshkosh 2-0. In Saturday’s round, Elk Mound beat Barron 2-1, lost to Athens this time, 2-0 then won 2-1 over Lake Holcombe.

Cadott Triangular

The Mounders dropped the first set against Gilman 22-25 but came back to take the next set 25-10. Down 7-1 in the third set, Elk Mound put a run together and pulled out the match with a 17-15 win. Hannah Flatness was the team leader in kills with 14 to go with seven by Morgan Radtke. Karie Jo Nigon set her teammates up 23 times and Jordyn Abramowicz scored points with three service aces. Abbey Olson collected nine digs while Nigon and Serena Wieser both finished with eight, and Lauren Scharlau and Flatness each had a pair of blocked shots.

The Mounders lost to Cadott 19-25 and 22-25 as Flatness slammed 11 kills to go with two aces and three blocks, Maddie Borofka added 13 assists with Nigon collecting eight, Olson did her part to save points with nine digs while Abramowicz finished with seven, and Radtke denied points at the net with four blocks and Scharlau had two.
