Colfax runners off to solid start

BOYCEVILLE — Getting the cross country season started is always a good thing according to Colfax coach Joe Doucette, and when the Viking girls won the 10 team Boyceville Alumni meet while the boys were second of 12 teams, it made things even better.

With senior Courtney Dressel winning the first meet of her career in a time of 21:25.7 and freshman Erica Kallstrom right behind her in 21:27.7, the Vikings had a nice 1-2 punch to get the season underway. The twosome were running in the 10-15 spots after the first mile but continued to move up to eventually take the lead. Abbagail Schotter came in for ninth place at 22:49 while Ally Heidorn and Hailey Prince ran neck and neck with Heidorn in 24th place at 24.17.5 and Prince in 25th at 24.17.7. The sixth runner for the team, Dempsey Fogarty is still getting her legs under her and worked out until the two mile mark before being pulled out. There were 97 individuals competing in the race.

“It is always nice to win a meet, even though it is early in the season,” Doucette said. “We were very conservative early on but as a team we ran very well the second half of the race. We have a ton of potential but we need to stay healthy and keep improving and build on this win.”

The boys were led by Tucker Hovde with a third place finish among 125 runners in the competition. Hovde ran a time of 18:26.7 which was 21 seconds behind McDonell Central’s Isaac Bohaty. Following Hovde was Brett Prince in seventh place in 19:03.7 and Zac Arvold in eighth at 19:05.7. Jacob Larson finished in 21st with a time of 19:54.8 and Brady Simonson was close behind in 25th in 20:19.5. Hunter Leiffort claimed a 30th place in 20:34.2 and Isaac (Ike) Lee ran a time of 20:45 for 34th place. The team was second behind McDonell who are the defending sectional champions.

“Competing against McDonell gives us an early look at a good team,” Doucette said. “Hovde is in great shape and I expect him to have a good year for us. I am very excited about the veteran team of boys we have and I really think they can be one of the area’s best teams if things go well,” he added.
