Glenwood City’s 2015 graduates awarded $197,600 in scholarships

GLENWOOD CITY — Scholarship awards earned by the past several graduating classes at Glenwood City High School have each topped the $100,000 mark, and it was no different for the school’s most recent crop of graduates.

Nearly 70 percent of Glenwood City’s Class of 2015 earned scholarship awards from private, public and local sources. This year’s awards total increased by $88,500 from a year ago, as 29 individuals out of the 42-member Class of 2015 garnered a combined tally of $197,600 in monetary awards.

A Lion’s share of the monies – nearly three-quarters – it was announced at the Scholarship and Awards Ceremony held Thursday morning, May 28 was awarded to three graduates. Scholarship awards to Jacob Hierlmeier, Marcus Kadinger and Isabella Nadeau amounted to $144,150 of the overall total.

Honor student Jacob Heirlmeier received the highest endowment amount, a sum of $59, 500 from ten different awards. Hierlmeier’s largest amounts came from the MacMurry Trustee Scholarship, valued at 52,000 ($13,000 annually for four years), and the MacMurray Jacquess Achievement Award, worth $1,000 per year for four years. He also received a $1,000 Russell Meyer Scholarship and a pair of $500 awards, the Dorothy Kuhn Memorial Scholarship and the Tim O’Meara Memorial Scholarship.

Marcus Kadinger, another of the class’s 11 honor students, pocketed the second largest award total. Kadinger, much like Hierlmeier, was the recipient of some large awards from his chosen institute of higher learning, Marion University. Kadinger was awarded a $9,500 Marian University Academic Achievement Award, a Marian University Sr. Mary Sheila Burns Award valued at $1,000, and an Early Sabre Award worth $500. All three scholarships are annual amounts and renewable for up to four years each. A $1,000 Russell Meyer Awarded was also among the eight awards that Kadinger received.

Isabella Nadeau also earned a class-leading ten scholarship awards. The vast majority of the $38,650 that Nadeau earned was given by St. Catherine’s University. The former Miss Glenwood City won a St. Catherine’s Venture Scholarship for a total of $20,000, split into $5,000 increments over a four-year span; a one-time St. Catherine’s Dean’s Scholarship worth $14,000; and a $600 St. Catherine’s Alumnae Referral Scholarship. Nadeau also garnered a $2,000 AnnMarie Foundation Scholarship, along with a pair of $500 awards from the Brenda Cassellius-Wink Memorial Scholarship and the Miss Glenwood City Scholarship.

Class Valedictorian Todd Petersen earned $12,700 from his ten scholarships. The largest, the State of Wisconsin’s Academic Excellence Scholarship, is valued at $2,250 per year for four years. Petersen was also awarded a $1,000 Russell Meyer Scholarship, a $550 Topper Partnership Foundation Award, and two $500 amounts from the Brenda Cassellius-Wink Memorial Scholarship and the Chuck Rasmussen Captains Scholarship.

Tyler Doornink earned a single scholarship award but it was worth $6,750. The Wisconsin Technical Excellence Scholar Award will pay Doornink $2,250 per year for up to three years.

Class vice president and honor student Kaitlin Konder was one of four class graduates to earn ten scholarship awards including three valued at $1,000 each for a total of $4,750. The $1,000 awards were from the Marcel and Edith Lynum Memorial, Russell Meyer and St. Croix Electric Cooperative Continuing Education Scholarships. Konder, who was president of the local FFA chapter this past year, was also awarded a $650 Glenwood City FFA Alumni Scholarship.

Honor student Megan Samens collected ten awards tallying $3,850. The largest of the ten were a pair of $1,000 awards, the Russell Meyer Scholarship and a Winona State University Academic Awards. She also received a $500 Chuck Rasmussen Captains Scholarship.

The Russell Meyer Scholarship fund benefited a dozen graduates this year with each receiving $1,000.
