Colfax sends 13 individuals, six relays on to sectionals

BOYCEVILLE — The temperature may have been in the mid sixties but it was hard to notice with the steady rain that fell throughout the day during the regional track and field meet held in Boyceville May 26. Athletes from 10 different schools all faced the challenge of running, jumping or throwing with the rain in their face or puddles at their feet, and when it all ended, the Colfax girls finished third in the team total while the boys were fourth. The girls had six individuals and two relay teams move on to sectionals by placing in the top four of their event, and the boys had seven individuals and all four relay teams advance. The top eight places scored team points in the meet.

For the girls, Dempsey Fogarty won the 800 m run (2:34.52) and the 4 X 800 relay also took first with Dannielle Dachel, Courtney Dressel, Mackenzie Jensen and Fogarty (10:18.93). Katie Christoffel had a great 300 m hurdle race, placing second (54.24) and several thirds were taken including Marianne Scharlau in the shot put (30-11.25), Ally Heidorn in the triple jump (29-00), Fogarty in the 400 m dash (1:03.36), Dachel in the 1600 m run (5:55.20), Christoffel in the 100 m hurdles (18.04) and the 4 X 100 relay with Christoffel, Megan Schleusner, Bryana Buchanan and Heidorn (54.82). Heidorn claimed a fourth in the 200 m dash (28.59) and just missed moving on with a fifth in the 100 m dash (13,75). Jezz Tweed also took fifth in the pole vault (6-00) as did Fogarty in the triple jump (15-01.50). In sixth place were Dressel in the 3200 m run (13:13.04), Caroline Dworak in the pole vault (5-00), Scharlau in the discus (78-04) and the 4 X 200 relay with Alyssa Miller, Erin Nellessen, Dworak and Schleusner (2:06.65). Abbagail Schotter claimed a seventh in the 1600 m run (6:08.20) and scoring her first team point of her career, senior Alexis Rudi, in her first year on the team, placed eighth in the shot put (26-01). Jensen finished ninth in the 3200 m run (13:26.94), Tweed was 14th in the 800 m run (3:18.33) and 18th in the 1600 (7:07.63) while Rudi was 15th in the discus (60-07).

Andrew Adix was the only individual winner for the boys as he zipped past the competition in the 200 m dash (23.34) and Jelani Smit slid over the hurdles in the 300 m event for second place (44.24). The 4 X 200 relay was also second with Jeremiah Wait leading things off, followed by Jacob Steinke, Brad Foyt and Adix (1:35.36). Ben Kragness will move on with a third in the shot put (42-11.50) but after throwing a personal best in the discus a week ago to win the conference meet, Kragness scratched on all three throws and did not qualify.

Wait placed third in the 100 m dash (11.97) along with Steinke, who has really began to peak at the right time, in the 200 m dash (24,77). After vaulting a personal best at the conference meet of 11-09, Hunter Leiffort managed to qualify by vaulting 9-00, also for a third. Final qualifiers were Zack Arvold in the 800 m run (2:11.89), Smit in the 110 hurdles (17.68), and three more relays including the 4 X 100 with Wait, Steinke, Foyt and Adix (46.56), the 4 X 400 with Tucker Hovde, Foyt, Arvold and Smit (3:45.66) and the 4 X 800 with Hovde, Jacob Larson, Brett Prince and Arvold (8:54.31).

Adding points to the team total were Hovde in the 1600 (4:54.46) and Kamdon Quast in the pole vault (8-06) who were both fifth, while Isaac Lee placed seventh in the triple jump (36-09-50). Lee was 11th in the long jump (17-02.50) along with Prince in the 1600 (5:14.54) and Michael Hurlburt in the 400 (1:00.50). Senior Jon Hayton ended his high school career with a 13th place in the 400 (1:02.42) along with Jacob Jensen in the 3200 (12:04.29) and Spencer Herrick in the shot put (33-07).
