DURAND — The Colfax softball team ended their year with a .500 record at 9-9 after losing in the first round of the regional tournament at Durand 9-2 May 27.
With Durand entering the Dunn-St. Croix Conference next year replacing St. Croix Central, the Vikings got a little taste of what they will have to face twice a year from now on and if this game was any indication of what is to come, there may be some tough competition for a conference title.
The Panthers went up 9-0 thanks to a six run outburst in the fifth inning before the Vikings managed to get on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Makayla Mattson drew a leadoff walk, moved up on a base hit by Mikaela Leibfried and both runners were plated by Lakken Meredith’s one out double. Kori Buchanan smacked a single and it looked like the Vikings might add some runs on but two ground ball outs ended the threat. Colfax went down in order in the seventh to end the game and their season. The Vikings collected only four hits in the game and struck out eight times against Panther pitcher Morganne Gruber, and the defense committed six errors in the contest.
“Finishing 9-9 for the season was, I feel a very successful season for us,” first year head coach Rich Meredith said. “We started four freshman, one sophomore, one junior and three seniors and lost several games by one or two runs. Many of our losses came from inexperience either in the field or on baserunning. I saw some things we need to work on and hopefully by playing some summer ball, we can grow as individuals and as a team and improve next spring,” he added.
