COLFAX — In what is believed to be only the second time in the last 44 years, the Memorial Day parade and ceremony in Sand Creek and Colfax were cancelled Monday.
Saturday afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service was predicting rain and strong thunderstorms with lightning for Monday morning, said Tom Dunbar, commander of the Russell-Toycen American Legion Post No. 131.
Dunbar said he was concerned about those marching in the parade, people lining the parade route and those gathering at the cemetery in the event that there was rain, but especially if there was lightning.
Dunbar and his wife, Kathy, began calling people Saturday evening to let them know the Memorial Day events were cancelled.
WEAU television also announced the cancellation on the ten o’clock news.
