Our food pantry runneth over!

Elk Mound is a growing community with a big heart, and this was clearly displayed by the community’s amazing response to the recent U.S. Postal Service Food Drive.  An estimated 4,000 pounds of food was collected and donated to the Elk Mound Community Food Pantry, located at Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church (207 University St., Elk Mound) on Saturday, May 9th. Volunteers worked for 8 hours on Saturday and several more Monday morning to sort and store the food for future distribution.

The Elk Mound Community Food Pantry provides food for its community members, and at times even beyond its borders.  Much of the food distributed through the pantry is purchased with donations from community churches, businesses, organizations and individuals.   The pantry is open two times a week, with NEW operating hours beginning in June: Tuesdays 4-6pm (NEW) and Fridays 10am-Noon.  “We are hoping to reach more individuals and families with our added afternoon/evening hours,” says Faylene Howe, Food Pantry Coordinator.

In addition to the Food Pantry, the generous community of Elk Mound also financially supports weekend meals for up to 110 children during the school year.  Mounders Meals were previously provided by Stepping Stones in Menomonie, but Elk Mound was asked to take this on as a community program so Stepping Stones could reach out to other communities in need.  Co-Program Directors, Sue Suechting and Lisa Strom explain, “This program is 100% dependent on the generosity of local churches, businesses, organizations and individuals to provide these weekend meals to the children; it’s good to know that we are making a positive impact in the lives of these children and their families.”

Plans are being made at this time to try and reach out to some of these same families throughout the summer months, to help them have the food they need for their children.
