Colfax girls runners up, boys third at D-SC meet

COLFAX — After finishing second a year ago behind St. Croix Central by 21 points in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet, just seven points separated the Colfax girls’ track and field team from first place this year. But it wasn’t the Panthers they were chasing, like most people thought, as the Mondovi Buffaloes finished on top at the meet held May 19 in Colfax.

The Buffaloes ended the meet with 133.50 points while the Vikings scored 126.50 and had several athletes have their best performances of the year as they prepare for regional competition at Boyceville May 26. The boys also had several personal bests (pb) and moved up from seventh place a year ago to third with 100 points, 62 points behind the favored St. Croix Central team and 17.5 behind Elk Mound.

Winning conference championships for the boys were Ben Kragness in both throwing events as he threw the discus 155’-09, beating his best toss by over 10 feet.Kragness also won the shot put for the second straight year with a heave of 47-01.50. Jelani Smit breezed through the 300m hurdles with a pb time of 42.27. The 4 X 200 relay also claimed the top spot with a pb time of 1:38.73 with Jeremiah Wait leading things off followed by Jacob Steinke, Brad Hoyt and anchor man Isaac Lee. Hunter Leiffort beat his own record in the pole vault by soaring 11’-09 for second place. Andrew Adix was also the runner up in the 200m dash with a pb time of 23.21 and the 4 X 800 relay with Tucker Hovde, Zack Arvold, Jacob Larson and Brett Prince had their best time at 9:48.80 for second place.

“All of our guys had a great meet,” coach Ryan Krall said. “We had a lot of personal bests and they are peaking at the right time. Ben had an outstanding discus throw and Jelani has become one of the top hurdlers in the area this year. Both our pole vaulters upped their height and our relays were outstanding.”

For the girls, Dempsey Fogarty continued her dominance in the 800m run, winning for the second straight year, this time in 2:32.40 and claimed the title in the 1600, barely beating out Elk Mound’s Elizabeth Fasbender. Fogarty timed in at 5:40.30,while Fasbender was in at 5:41.91.Fogarty also claimed a second in the 400m dash in 1:04.50 along with Ally Heidorn in the 200m dash with a pb of 27.88, and the 4 X 800 relay with Dannielle Dachel, Courtney Dressel, Mackenzie Jensen and Abbagail Schotter finished in 10:41.52.

“We figured if we scored more then Central we would win the meet,” coach Krall said. “We were caught off guard by Mondovi. But with our 15 girls, we had a great team performance. We stretched our girls pretty thin, trying to get points wherever we could. We just ran out of gas at the end.”

Following are the results of all other Colfax competitors. The top eight places scored team points and the top three in each event earned All Conference recognition.
