Lady Vikings lose only game of the week to Buffaloes

After defeating Mondovi back in April by a score of 18-11, the Colfax softball team struggled to hold a lead this time around and dropped a 12-10 contest at home against the Buffaloes May 12. (The game against conference leading Elk Mound May 14 was postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled for May 22 in Elk Mound).

It looked like it might be another high scoring game after Mondovi scored three runs in the top of the first and the Vikings topped it with five of their own in the bottom of the inning. Both pitchers were having trouble finding the plate including Viking hurler Becca Lee who walked four Buffaloes in the inning while Mondovi’s Paige Platter issued four free passes of her own. Lakken Meredith, Courtney Ottinger, Kori Buchanan, Dailyn Mortenson and Karina Wait all crossed home plate with Meredith and Mortenson both slamming doubles in the inning.

Colfax upped their lead to 6-3 when Buchanan smacked a solo homerun in the second but saw their lead dwindle to 6-5 before adding a run in the third when Wait singled, moved up on walks to Andrea Ottinger and Makayla Mattson and came home on Lee’s base hit. Mondovi took an 8-7 lead in the top of the fifth but Colfax came back with three runs with Wait drawing a walk and moving to second on a wild pitch, then stealing third. After a pair of strikeouts, Lee came up with a clutch single to bring her in and tie the game, Meredith banged her own single and Hailey Durand slammed a double to the centerfield fence for two RBIs and a 10-8 Colfax lead.

Meredith was now on the mound for the Vikings and had her own problems in the sixth when Mondovi scored four runs on several base hits, a pair of walks and a Colfax error for a 12-10 advantage, and the Vikings went down with a whimper after Platter found her mojo and put them down in order the final two innings.

Meredith, Buchanan and Lee all spanked a pair of hits to lead the offense while Lee allowed eight runs on five hits, eight walks and four strikeouts. Meredith gave up four runs on four hits, four walks and a pair of Ks.
