The overcast skies that hung over the area most of the day made way for some sun just after the Viking Invitational track and field meet got under way at LP Bjurquist Athletic Complex May 12. Both the Colfax boys and girls came out on top with the boys beating out 14 other teams and the girls outdistanced12 teams to win the meet. Up next, Colfax will host the Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet May 19.
The girls had three individuals win four events as Dempsey Fogarty won the 400 m run (1:02.41) and the 800 m run (2:34.43). Katie Christoffel topped the field in the 100 m hurdles (17.63) and Courtney Dressel won the 3200 m run (13:16.19). Fogarty also anchored the second place 4 X 800 relay with Dannielle Dachel, Mackenzie Jensen and Dressel (10:21.33), while Dachel also claimed second in the 1600 m run (5:57.29), along with Ally Heidorn in the 200 m dash (28.00) and the 4 X 200 relay with Bryana Buchanan, Heidorn, Christoffel and Megan Schleusner (1:55.53).
Thirds came from Abbagail Schotter in the 3200 (13:50.38) and Heidorn in the triple jump (30-09.50). Marianne Scharlau claimed fourth place in the shot put (30-10) and Dachel was fifth in the 800 (2:41.71) as was the 4 X 400 relay with Jensen, Schleusner, Erin Nellessen and Cari Dworak (4:45.45). Jensen added a sixth in the 1600 (6:12.09), Buchanan was seventh in the 100 m dash (13.87) and final team points came from Jezz Tweed in the pole vault (5-06) and Scharlau in the discus throw (76-03).
Dachel was ninth in the triple jump (27-10.50), Dworak was 11th in the pole vault (5-06), Nellessen came in 13th in the 200 m dash (31,44), Alyssa Miller came in at 14th in the 100 m dash (14.80) and Tweed was 15th in the 400 (1:17.47).
For the boys, Jelani Smit claimed a first in his specialty, the 300 m hurdles (42.66) while a pair of relay teams were also first including the 4 X 100 with Jeremiah Wait, Jacob Steinke, Brad Foyt and Andrew Adix (46.21) and the same four in the 4 X 200 (1:36.43). Five individuals took seconds with Smit in the 110 m hurdles (16.46), Adix was just behind Elk Mound speedster Jonah Bauer in the 200 m dash (22.94), Hunter Leiffort in the pole vault after coming back from a neck injury (11-00), Isaac Lee in the triple jump (38-10.50 and Ben Kragness in the discus (145-00).
Kragness added a third in the shot put (44-09) along with the 4 X 800 relay with Tucker Hovde, Lee, Zack Arvold and Foyt (9:07.08). Hovde was also fourth in the 1600 (4:53.99) along with Jacob Larson in the 800 (2:18.10).Lee high jumped to a fifth place tie (5-04), the 4 X 400 relay took sixth with Arvold, Foyt, Hovde and Smit (3:50.13), Brett Prince was seventh in the 800 (2:19.35) and Adix added an eighth place in the long jump (17-10).
Smit added a ninth place in the 100 m dash (11.94) as did Kamdon Quast in the pole vault (8-06) while Jacob Jensen raced to a 10th place in the 3200 (11:55.77) along with Lee in the long jump (17-04). Prince finished 11th in the 1600 (5:20.06) along with Arvold in the 400 (58.46) and Steinke in the 200 (24,58). Adam Pretasky was 16th in the 100 m dash (12.56) and Spencer Herrick was 20th in the discus (90-09) and 21st in the shot put (31-10).
