August 15: “Battle of the Bands” coming to Main Street

By LeAnn R. Ralph

COLFAX — Seeing as the Colfax Sesquicentennial Celebration in July of 2014 went over so well, the Colfax Commercial Club will be hosting the Colfax Founder’s Day Celebration “Battle of the Bands” on Main Street August 15.

The application form for bands to apply is now available on the Colfax Commercial Club’s website, along with the rules and regulations for the Battle of the Bands (

The Battle of the Bands is open to any band playing any genre of music.

Eight bands will be selected to participate in the event.

“The Battle of the Bands is a great way to showcase the wide variety of local musical talent and at the same time add excitement in the form of a competition,” said Scott Gunnufson, president of the Colfax Commercial Club.

First prize will be $2,500. Second prize will be $1,500. And third prize will be $500.

The application form asks for the band’s website URL, if one is available, along with a YouTube search name for videos featuring that particular band.

The application deadline is June 15, and the Colfax Commercial Club is asking for a $25 application fee.

The application also asks for references (places that the band has performed) and a listing of the members who play in the band.

“We hope to have bands not only from our hometown but also from the neighboring communities where they can help attract people in coming to Colfax,” Gunnufson said.

Along with the Battle of the Bands on August 15 on Main Street, a chicken dinner will be served on Main Street from 12 noon to 3 p.m.

The bands will start playing at 4 p.m., and the winning band will perform from 10 p.m. to midnight on Main Street.

The bands will be judged on five categories: planning and preparedness; originality (do the songs fit the genre; is the band’s appearance original; does the band stand out); interface with the audience; quality of performance; and presentation (how did the audience respond to the band’s performance; what was the cheer level).

A sound system will be provided for the bands. The time available for set-up of instruments, performances and removal of instruments will be 45 minutes for each band.

The Colfax Commercial Club will be hosting a beer garden on Main Street, and additional food vendors will be setting up after 4 p.m. along Main Street or the side streets.

The Colfax Health and Rehabilitation Center will be hosting a pig roast on Friday evening, August 14.

Colfax Lutheran Church will be holding a pancake breakfast in the morning on August 15.

Visitors to Colfax can tour the Colfax Railroad Museum, go on the Walking Tour of Historic Sandstone Buildings in Colfax, shop at the downtown retailers, visit the Class of 1958’s flower garden by the Red Cedar River, and walk the trail along Eighteen Mile Creek.

Admission to Battle of the Bands is free, and the Colfax Commercial Club is promoting it as a family-friendly event.

Nearly 40 businesses and organizations in and around Colfax are members of the Colfax Commercial Club.
