WISCONSIN DELLS — After qualifying during regional competition in January, members of the Elk Mound High School Academic Decathlon team placed third in their division and 19th of 20 teams overall at the state competition held in Wisconsin Dells March 12-13.
Academic Decathlon teams are comprised of nine students, three Honor students with a Grade Point Average of 3.75-4.0, three Scholastic students with a GPA of 3.00-3.74 and three Varsity students with a GPA of 0-2.99. All nine students take written tests in several categories including art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, and social studies and the top two scores in each category determine the team score. Katie Paulich took team honors for the Mounders.
“It was the first time this group had competed in a venue such as this and I think they were a little intimidated,” coach Jeff Mack said. “We didn’t do as well as we had hoped to.”
