Seventh Heaven-Colfax girls claim another D-SC title with wins over Glenwood City and Mondovi

With just eight teams in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference this year, the Colfax girls moved to 13-0 in the conference. With only one conference game left and escaping with a 41-35 win at Glenwood City Feb. 10, they then took a home victory 57-31 over Mondovi three days later. The wins gave the Vikings their seventh consecutive Dunn-St. Croix Conference title and their ninth in ten years.

Glenwood City

After beating the Hilltoppers by 19 points earlier in the year, this game turned out to be a little closer. Glenwood was up 10-5 midway through the first quarter and held a 10-9 advantage when the quarter ended.

Colfax put the pedal to the metal in the second stanza, outscoring the Toppers 15-5 with Karina Wait putting the Vikings ahead on a deuce while Dempsey Fogarty dropped in a free throw. Fogarty added two more free tosses and Chey Olson drained a triple to go with a pair of Dannielle Dachel free tosses and buckets by Fogarty and Katie Christoffel for a 24-15 advantage at the break.

All of the Colfax scoring in the third quarter came by way of three point land with Wait hitting a trey and Dachel connecting on back to back attempts as the Vikings upped their lead to 33-21 heading into the final stanza. The Toppers however had an offensive surge with 14 fourth quarter points which included a couple of triples while Colfax added only eight points, hitting just two of seven free throws down the stretch. Their cushion was big enough however, to finish off the win.

Dachel led the Vikings with 11 points with a trio of triples while Olson was the top rebounder with nine. Christoffel added three assists and Fogarty swiped the ball away three times to lead the defense. Colfax was five of 21 from behind the arc and 10 for 20 at the charity stripe while the Toppers were  four of 11 from the foul line.

Mondovi

Balanced scoring was a key for the Vikings in the win on senior night with nine players putting points up and only one, Dachel, finishing in double figures with 12 for the game. Wait got her team going with six first quarter points, a pair of deuces sandwiched around two free throws.  Fogarty and Olson both dropped in close range shots and Alexis Rudi hit a free throw for an 11-5 lead.

The Colfax defense held the Buffaloes to just four second quarter points while they poured in 13, including a triple each by Andrea Brantner, Christoffel and Olson which upped the lead at halftime to 24-9.

Dachel went on one of her famous scoring streaks with ten points in the third quarter, scoring from long range once, short range three times and from the charity stripe once. Fogarty, Christoffel, Olson and Ally Heidorn all added a two point shot as Colfax held a 20 point advantage at 42-22 heading into the final stanza. Holding Mondovi to single digit scoring with nine points while adding 15 of their own finished off the win for the Vikings. Bryana Buchanan scored her first varsity points with a deuce during the quarter.

“I think we were a little too excited early on and started slow,” coach Doucette said. “But once we settled down, we played well with only six turnovers in the game and 14 assists. Everybody contributed for us including our five seniors and everyone off the bench. It was a great atmosphere for us to play in with a great crowd. We are very proud to win the conference title and it was hard earned,” he added.

After games at Ladysmith this past Monday and at Elmwood-Plum City this Thursday to finish off the regular season, Colfax will take a number one seed into the regional tournament and will have a bye the first round. They will host the winner of the Boyceville-Glenwood City game Friday, Feb. 27.
