Vikings put Panthers away with big second half

COLFAX – Outscoring the Ellsworth Panthers 20-4 in the third quarter put the game away quickly for the Colfax boys as they improved their record to 4-3 with a 56-34 win at home Dec. 22.

The score was knotted at 8-8 after the first quarter with Sawyer DeMoe hitting a pair of shots from close range sandwiched around a layup by Aliymu Davis and a couple of free throws from Ben Kragness. After Andrew Harmon canned a triple to start the second stanza for an 11-8 Colfax lead, Ellsworth gained the lead back however, at 16-11 after scoring several quick buckets off transition baskets. Neither team got into the bonus in the first half as the referees were letting the kids play and the half ended with the Vikings up 20-18 with Kedar Davis scoring nine of the Vikings 12 points.

The Panthers scored on a short jumper to knot it at the beginning of the third but the Vikings stepped up their defense which in turn aided the offense. Shots that weren’t falling in the first half were finally finding their mark and in just a few minutes, the Vikings were up 30-20. Aliymu  Davis scored six points on a put back, a short jumper and a fast break layup and DeMoe added a close range shot with a Jarrod Rudi bucket in the run. Kedar Davis flashed his speed and athletic ability as he swiped the ball away from the Panthers on three consecutive possessions resulting in his layup and three of four free throws and the Vikings went into the final quarter up 40-22.

“We really put on the pressure in the third quarter and took them out of their game,” coach Garrett Maas said. “We were aggressive and started to get the ball in the basket off the press.”

Colfax upped the lead to 20 points at 54-34 late in the fourth  and Brett Prince hit the final bucket to finish off the win.

There were a few career highs in the scoring department for the Vikings as both Aliymu and Kedar Davis had 14 points each to lead the team and Harmon had a personal high five points. DeMoe added 13 in the win. Colfax was nine of 15 at the free throw line with three triples in the game. The Vikings are off until Jan. 6 when they host Elk Mound.
