Mounders head into break with win over Bulldogs

ELK MOUND -— A huge second quarter by the Elk Mound boys broke the game open as they bombed the Boyceville Bulldogs 53-30 in their final game before the Christmas break Dec. 18.

Leading 13-8 after a quarter of play, the Mounders erupted for 22 second quarter points for a 35-13 halftime lead. Justin Erpenbach continues to burn the nets as he contributed with 15 of his game high 17 points in the first half while Cole Tyman and Brandon Bohl both added six each.

Those points were needed when the offense was shut down in the third stanza as Tyman was the only Mounder to add points when he hit a three pointer. But the Bulldogs couldn’t find the hoop either and they ended up with only three points themselves. Leading 38-16 heading into the last eight minutes of play, Elk Mound connected on eight of 14 foul shots to help finish off the win.

Tyman joined Erpenbach in double figure scoring with 11 points and the Mounders were 18 of 29 from the charity stripe while Boyceville was eight of 10. Elk Mound also came up with seven triples in the game while the Bulldogs were shut out from long range all night. The Bulldogs were called for 30 fouls in the game and the Mounders were whistled  just 11 times.

“I thought we played a great first half,” Elk Mound coach Chris Hahn said. “We had much more energy and did some good things on defense. We forced them into turnovers quite often and contested most of their shots. But we had too many turnovers ourselves. We shot better than in other games and Erpenbach really carried us offensively the first half,” he added.
