Suspect identified in Elk Mound village hall burglary

ELK MOUND — A 23-year-old man wanted in connection with burglaries in Rusk County and Chippewa County has been identified as the suspect caught on videotape burglarizing the Elk Mound village hall and police department.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Department sent out an initial release on November 22 with a still photo from the village hall’s security videotape showing the suspect wearing a stocking cap and a hooded jacket from O’Neill Creek Campground, with the lower part of his face covered.

The suspect had broken into the village hall in the early morning hours of November 22.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Department declined to list the items that had been stolen but did ask for help from the public in identifying the suspect.

Sergeant Marshall Multhauf, sergeant of investigations at the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, sent out a news release on November 24 stating that the suspect had been identified as 23-year-old Darren J. Bishop.

According to the news release, Bishop is wanted by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department and is the suspect in a burglary at the O’Neill Creek Campground and also is the suspect in other burglaries in Rusk County and Chippewa County.

Bishop was identified in conjunction with information from the Chippewa County and Rusk County sheriff’s departments, along with the valuable tips provided by the public.

The Chippewa, Dunn and Rusk county sheriff’s departments are now asking for help from the public in locating Bishop.

According to the news release from Dunn County, Bishop is considered to be armed and dangerous.

According to a statement from Elk Mound Police Chief Travis Hakes, “The teamwork shown between the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, Rusk County Sheriff’s Department and members of the community that stepped forward are second to none. It is teamwork like this that makes our area communities strong.”
