One dead, two injured in Tainter accident

TOWN OF TAINTER —  An Elk Mound woman was killed and two men in the vehicle were seriously injured following a traffic accident in the Town of Tainter on Tuesday, September 23.

A passenger, Vannessa N. Marsh, 18, of Elk Mound, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Gunnar D. Zurek, 19, also of Elk Mound, and another passenger, Joseph E. Thalacker, 34, of Augusta, were both seriously injured and were transported by ambulance.

According to a news release from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, a one-vehicle crash was reported at 11:11 p.m. September 23 in the 7500 block of 770th Avenue in the Town of Tainter.

When officers arrived on the scene, two adult men were outside of the vehicle and had sustained serious injuries. A third occupant had been ejected from the vehicle.

According to a preliminary investigation, the vehicle appeared to have been traveling east on 770th Avenue, veered into the ditch on the south side of the road and rolled several times.

Officers from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department and the Colfax Police Department responded to the accident, along with the Colfax Rescue Squad and Menomonie fire and ambulance.

None of the occupants of the 2001 Dodge Stratus appeared to have been wearing seatbelts, and alcohol appears to have been a factor in the accident, according to the news release from the sheriff’s department.

After alcohol and drug testing have been completed, the case will be forwarded to the Dunn County District Attorney’s office to review for charges, the news release states.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating the accident.
