Elk Mound cross country runners competed twice last week with the boys placing fourth and the girls fifth at the Mondovi Invitational Sept. 23. They then raced in Durand two days later, resulting in a ninth place finish for the boys and a seventh place for the girls.
Two Mounder boys cracked the top ten with Caleb Kruger taking sixth in 19:07 while Lucas Winter was ninth at 19:53. Ryan Mohr followed for 21st place in 21:34, Jake Johnson came in a few spots behind for 24th in 21:43, Jared Strand finished in 22:19 for 27th, Nate Kruger was 30th at 22:41 and Hayden Kohls was the seventh runner for Elk Mound, placing 36th at 23:16. There were 62 individuals in the race which was won by Spring Valley’s Aiden Manley in 18:13.
Running without their number one runner Elizabeth Fasbender and a few other regulars, Hannah Cedarblade led the Mounder girls with a 15th place finish among 50 individuals with a time of 25:38. Running in a pack, Kaitlyn Baier was 26th at 28:56, Nevada LaPointe also ran a time of 28.56 for 27th, Lexi Schindler was 29th at 29:41, O’Ryhann Hay was 31st at 30:16 for the final Mounder team points, and Mattea Linberg was 34th at 30:51 and on her heels was Hannah Carlson in 35th at 30:52. Sydney Becker, a freshman for Melrose-Mindoro won the race in 22:42 while three of her teammates took the 2, 3 and 4 spots.

Fasbender was back in action after taking a break as she led the girls with a tenth place in a field of 79 competitors. Her time of 22:16 was over a minute behind the winner Sidney Renelt of Lake City, MN who finished in 21:07. Cedarblade was the second Mounder in for 25th at 23:50 followed by Hay in 54th at 26:28, Baier in 57th at 26:50, Elayna Gutsch in 59th at 27:07, Carlson in 62nd at 27:33 and Linberg in 67th at 28:42.
Caleb Kruger was the first Mounder to cross the finish line, placing 13th in 18:31, just over a minute behind the top runner Carl Koslowski of Lake City who ran the course in 17:29. Nate Kruger followed Caleb, finishing 62nd in 21:14, Strand was close behind for 67th place in 21:19, Johnson placed 73rd in 21:27, Jonas Kohls was 83rd in 22:03, Grant Kjellberg was 84th at 22:03 and Mohr was 92nd in 22:46.
