Running under near perfect conditions with temperatures in the mid 60s on a course that was in great condition according to coach Jeremiah Fredrickson, the Elk Mound boys finished seventh of 15 teams in the Small School Division (21st overall of 29 teams) while the girls team was 10th of 15 teams (21st of 27 overall) at the Rice Lake Invite Sept. 16. Both teams competed two days later at the Altoona Invite and both finished in fifth place of 14 teams.
Caleb Kruger dropped 36 seconds off his time from last weeks meet in Fall Creek, placing 10th in 18:14 in a field of 109 individuals. Lucas Winter was the next Mounder in, finishing 29th at 19:15 followed by Hayden Kohls in 42nd at 19:54. Coming in at 61st place was Ryan Mohr at 20:50, Jake Johnson was 63rd in 21:01, Nate Kruger was one spot behind in 64th at 21:01 and Jared Strand was 71st at 21:34.
Elizabeth Fasbender just missed a top ten finish for the girls, placing 11th in 22:09 while Hannah Cedarblade was further back in 38th place at 24:49. Elayna Gutsch was the third Mounder in at 26:31 for 62nd place, Kaitlyn Baier was close behind in 66th at 26:40 and Nevada LaPointe 70th in 26:51.
“We had a lot of personal best times today,” Fredrickson said. “Overall, we are really happy about where we are at. We still hope to keep improving and get a few to the state meet this year. There is a lot of good competition around the area though.”
The Mounder Middle School girl’s team was 11th with Brook Plaszcz placing 15th and Alana Plaszcz 16th in a field of 131 competitors.

Fasbender placed third with a time of 21:45 and Cedarblade cut two minutes off her best time to finish in 11th place in 22:43.Baier was the third one in for the Mounders in 40th place at 26:12, LaPointe was right behind in 41st at 26:21 and Hannah Carlson was 44th at 26:31. The race was won by Eileen Endres of Eau Claire Regis in 20:20 while Fall Creek won the team title.
Caleb Kruger had another top 10 finish, placing eighth in 18:08, Winter was next in for Elk Mound for 23rd in 19:05, Nate Kruger came in at 20:13 for 39th, Hayden Kohls was 42nd in 20:29 and Jake Johnson finished in 52nd at 20:46. Matt Kamla of Galesville-Ettrick-Trempealeau was the first individual to cross the finish line in 17:34 and Altoona won the team championship.
“Our kids ran very well which was a little surprising after a good race Tuesday and a tough workout on Wednesday,” coach Fredrickson said. “About half of them ran personal best times so I guess they are responding to our training program”.
