America is growing older putting a new urgency on the issue of elder abuse, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. Census statistics indicate a major increase in the numbers of people living well into their 80’s and 90’s in coming years. The government stats also reveal that the country’s cadre of centenarians is growing in size as never before.
The Pew Research Center reports that ten thousand Americans will turn 65 years of age each day for the next two decades and the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that at least 10% of them will be victims of elder abuse.
For the most part, this malignant form of ageism was a dirty little secret until the sad facts came to light when Mickey Rooney testified before Congress. Rooney passed away at age 93 early in 2014, but in 2011 he testified that his stepson and his stepson’s wife allegedly denied him food and medicine and robbed him of millions of dollars over a period of several years.
