COLFAX — It had all the makings of a long and exciting match when the Bloomer Blackhawks entered the Colfax gym for the first dual match of the season last Tuesday. Bloomer was coming off a 12-2 record last year in the Heart O’ North Conference for second place while the Colfax girls are the defending Dunn-St. Croix Conference champions. But it turned out to be a short night as the Vikings used consistent serving and some timely kill shots to take a three set win over the Blackhawks.
The Vikings played from behind most of the first set as they were down 13-7 before Dannielle Dachel stepped up to the service line and rattled off eight consecutive serves including a pair of aces, resulting in a 16-13 Colfax lead. Kori Buchanan had two kills in the run while Lakken Meredith and Marianne Scharlau both added slams for points.Colfax kept the pressure on with Courtney Ottinger serving up five points and a Buchanan-Chey Olson combined block put the Vikings up 22-15. Several Bloomer errors allowed Colfax to earn the 25-16 win.
The Vikings came out in game two a little lackluster, falling behind 6-0 before another Bloomer mistake put them on the board. Ottinger came up to the serving line again for four points but the Blackhawks moved to an 8-5 lead.Buchanan put a shot to the floor and another Bloomer error gave Colfax a 9-8 lead. The score was knotted six times after that and at 18-18, Buchanan served for a point and Olson added a kill for a two point lead. Meredith served up an unreturnable ball, Olson scored on another kill and served another point to get to set point at 24-20, and after Bloomer added a couple of points, Meredith slipped a two handed quick set over for the game winner at 25-22.
Colfax again had to come from behind in set three after falling behind 6-3. In a back and forth game, the score was knotted four times and at 11-11, Meredith went to the service line again for five points including an ace for a 16-11 lead. Scharlau scored on a tip shot and another Ottinger serve made it 22-17 in the Vikings favor and with the score at 24-20, Olson blocked a Bloomer kill attempt to make it game, set and match for Colfax at 25-20.
Buchanan finished with nine kills and Olson added eight for the match. Olson also collected 11 digs and Buchanan 10 while Meredith led in assists with 20. Ottinger was a perfect 16 for 16 at the service line with a pair of aces while Dachel was also perfect, going 13 for 13 with four aces.
Colfax is off until Sept. 13 when they travel to Hudson for a Saturday tournament.
