Lady Vikings place third at Menomonie Sprawl

Playing in the Silver Bracket at the Menomonie Sprawl held at UW-Stout Labor Day weekend, the Colfax volleyball team placed third against competition from all four divisions in the state. After losing to Oshkosh Lourdes 23-25, 18-25, the Vikings came back to beat St. Croix Falls 25-17, 25-14. They dropped a hard fought match against River Falls 11-25, 25-20, 12-15 then finished their Friday off with another loss, 23-25, 22-25 to Cameron, one of the favorites in the same sectional as Colfax this year.

Colfax started their Saturday off with a bang, beating Grantsburg, the team they lost to in the regional last year, 22-25, 26-24, 15-10, then played the number one seed in their bracket, Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH). They came up with a huge win, dropping the first set 18-25, then won the next two 25-15 and 17-15. The win forced another match against River Falls, which they dropped, again in three sets 21-25, 25-15 and 3-15. Finally getting a little rest, Colfax ended the Sprawl with a win over rival Elk Mound, 24-11, 17-25, and after falling behind 8-1 in the third set, came back for a 15-12 win as Kori Buchanan put the game away with a kill.

“We played some grueling matches and I was proud of how hard the girls worked in all of them,” coach Pam Meredith said. “We had a lot of volleyball without a break on Saturday and to pull out the win over Elk Mound shows how hard they can work.”

Buchanan and Chey Olson each finished with 62 kills for the tournament to lead the Vikings’ offensive attack, and on the defensive side, Buchanan came up with 65 digs and Olson  58. Lakken Meredith served up 13 aces for the tournament to lead in that department.
