Colfax boys win Boyceville Alumni Invite, girls sixth

BOYCEVILLE — The Colfax boys cross country team started the season off with a bang by winning the 11 team Boyceville Alumni Invitational meet Aug. 28 at Tiffany Creek Elementary School.

The girls had some health problems and battled to a sixth place finish in a field of 10 teams.  Race time was moved up to 11:00 to avoid any potential problems with heat and humidity such as what occurred last year when several girls collapsed during the race, resulting in canceling the rest of the races. The weather cooperated this year however, as the temperature was in the mid seventies with a nice breeze.

Zack Arvold was the first runner in for the Viking boys, placing fifth in a time of 18:30 as Jordan Bringgold of St. Croix Central won the race at 17:25. Running second for Colfax was Tucker Hovde in ninth place in 18:58, followed by  a pack of runners including Brady Simonson (15th, 19:58), Brett Prince (16th, 20:03), Hunter Lieffort (17th, 20:06) and Jacob Larson (20th, 20:28). Further back were Issac Lee (29th, 20:51), Daniel Schneider (42nd, 22:06), Grady Gibson (54th, 22.46), and Rowdy Kadinger (91st, 25:03). There were 119 individuals competing.

“Our top five boys were solid today,” coach Joe Doucette said. “Nobody is in great shape yet but we have a chance to be really tough as the season progresses. It is always nice to win a meet but we realize that good teams keep improving and we will work hard to do that.”

Lead runner for the Colfax girls was Dannielle Dachel who glided in for fifth place at 22:42 in the now 5K race. Abbagail Schotter was close behind in eighth at 22:56 and Mackenzie Jensen had a top 20 finish by placing 14th at 23:44 while Ally Heidorn and Cienna Cooper kept each other company as Heidorn placed 59th in 27:43 and Cooper 60th at 27:45. Individual winner Emily Jaeger of Fall Creek led the Crickets to the team title with a time of 21:42. 88 girls finished the race.

“This was a good starting point for the girls,” Doucette said. “We were missing a couple of girls at the end but it was a good experience. Our biggest concern is our depth so we need to stay healthy.”

Erica Kallstrom of Colfax won the middle school race for the girls while Dalton Schotter was second in the middle school boys division.
