At the end of the summer season, you might find yourself with empty propane tanks either from a gas grill or camping. If you no longer have a use for these tanks, there are a few recycling options.
Empty, undamaged 20 pound propane tanks, typically used for grills, can be reused and may be taken to one of Cedar County Cooperative’s auto repair locations in either Menomonie or Colfax. 20 pound tanks that are no longer usable, or small camp size propane tanks, may be recycled at the Dunn County Transfer Station and Recycling Center or any Area Collection Station. However, Dunn County’s scrap metal recycler requires the valve or cap to be removed and the tank should have an additional hole placed in it (Dunn County’s scrap vendor has no recommendations on this process). All propane tanks recycled at the Transfer Station or an area collection station should be handed directly to a site attendant. There is no fee to recycle propane tanks.
