Elk Mound Legion baseball suffers three tough losses

The Elk Mound Legion baseball team dropped its third straight contest with a one-run, 5-4 loss on the road in Pepin on Friday, July 25.

Elk Mound also dropped two games in the previous week’s play.

Due to various reasons, the Elk Mound Legion baseball team was only able to play two of its scheduled seven games the week of July 14-20, and both resulted in a pair of close games ending in losses for them. The Legion lost 4-1 to Altoona to start that week, then followed up with a 2-1 loss to Durand.

The Legion team will wrap up the season with a couple of games against Spring Valley this week.

Trailing by three runs in their final at bat in Pepin Friday, July 25, Elk Mound’s Legion team rallied to knot the game at four all.But Pepin scored a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning to win 5-4.

Jon Storing went three-for-three at the plate with a run scored while Grant Kjellberg and Cole Tyman each collected two hits in the loss. Kjellberg also scored two runs and Tyman had a pair of RBI.

Brandon Bohl pitched six innings for Elk Mound as he struck out ten but walked five and gave up four hits and four runs, all earned, to suffer the loss.

Brandon Bohl continues to bowl opposing hitters down as he struck out 13 Altoona players in seven innings while walking four to absorb the loss. Bohl also led the offense, batting 3 for 3 while Cole Tyman was 2 for 4 for the game.

Hitting seems to be the problem for Elk Mound as they collected just two hits in the game with Bohl and Ryan Conlin picking them up. Although the team drew six walks, nobody could follow up with any big slams to bring runners in as Tyman had the only RBI for the team. Grant Kjellberg went the distance on the mound, whiffing four batters and walking just one in six innings.

“We continue to get good pitching and our fielding has been solid with only one error all week,” coach Steve Kjellberg said. “But we are really struggling with our hitting.”
