Colfax Health and Rehab – 5-28-2014
The Carpenters sang “Rainy Days and Mondays” in 1971. The first verse ended with “Hanging around, nothing to do but frown, rainy days and Mondays always get me down.” Despite the fact that Monday was a very rainy day residents did not frown or get down.
Residents got up and enjoyed a fine breakfast and at 10 o’clock they were in the Square for devotions, current events and a bit of exercise. Dinner was available in the dining areas and at 1 pm the Birch lane was buzzing with activity when the REX Class began. We had a sing-a-long in the afternoon. Kathie Irwin tickled the piano keys with her talented hands. She received a “Sitting Ovation” from the residents. We sang the old familiar songs we all know and love.
On Tuesday morning we had devotions, reading and exercise. In the afternoon we had our regular bingo in the square. The tables were ready; the cards were in place when residents arrived. They always have their favorite place to sit. The games commenced at 2 p.m. sharp. Trays of bingo treats sat waiting to be chosen. The bags of puffed popcorn, honey buns, brownies, beanie babies and snack bars are the first to be chosen. Oranges are very popular as well. Happy Hour followed bingo. Beer, wine, brandy and chips, coffee and cookies were available during this social time.
On Wednesday morning Pastor Conklin led the Church service. Delores Huber accompanied him on the piano. After dinner many residents and many family members gathered in the Square for our annual Memorial Service honoring the residents and staff that went home to be with the Lord between May 1, 2013 to May 1, 2014. Delores Huber was our pianist in the afternoon. As the resident’s names were read by Cathy and Veda; a vase with a carnation and baby’s breath was given to a friend or family member present. We sang hymns and at the close of the service Laura Kressin sang “How Great Thou Art”. She has an amazing voice. The chefs in the kitchen served a fabulous rhubarb torte to the guests and residents.
The Thursday morning activity program was volleyball. Our residents like an active activity program as well as just entertainment. The evening ball game is very well attended and enjoyed. Teak came to do her famous manicures. She is very kind to come from Menomonie every Thursday as a volunteer. In the afternoon Steve Szydell played his guitar. Steve gets the toes tapping and residents are always looking forward to his performances.
On Friday morning Loretta led Rosary for our Catholic residents. Glen and Julie led the gospel sing and Delores played the piano. Dime Bingo was the afternoon event.
On Saturday afternoon residents played Hollywood. Linnea, Leona Ubbelhode, Taek and Veda were here to help where needed. As the week came to a close, the sunshine and warm weather were eagerly welcomed. Residents were able to get outdoors and get some sweet fresh air. (If anyone has an extra sun hat for our residents we would be to happy borrow them).
That is just some of what we did here in the land of Colfax where the bear and deer roam, and the men, women and children like to call their home!
