Lady Mounders end week with 4 wins, one loss

With four conference games and a Saturday tournament scheduled last week, the Elk Mound softball players kept themselves plenty busy. Starting with a 15-8 win Monday, May 5 at Spring Valley, they followed up with a 10-6 home victory against Elmwood-Plum City 24 hours later. A much anticipated game against Pepin, one of several teams just one game behind the Mounders in conference play was postponed on Thursday, but a Friday game at Mondovi resulted in a 13-4 win for the Mounders. And taking advantage of some beautiful weather (finally), they split a pair of Saturday games, losing 10-0 to Arcadia then crushing Lake Holcombe-Cornell 18-4. Elk Mound is now 10-4 overall and 9-1 in conference play.

Spring Valley

The Mounders had to come from behind when they were down 5-1 heading into the top of the fourth inning. They finally got their bats going, coming up with five runs with five runs for a 6-5 lead then added runs in the next three innings to maintain a lead and take the win. Abbey Olson had the hot bat as she stroked a hit in all four plate appearances, scoring four times and bringing in  a pair of runs, Kaity Johnson went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI while Lexi DeLong banged three hits in six at bats with a trio of RBIs and came home twice. Dayna Kotecki pitched all seven innings for the win, giving up nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Elk Mound tallied 10 hits with Olson the only one with more than one as she went 2 for 4. As the day heated up so did the Mounder bats as they rebounded with 13 hits and after holding a 6-3 lead after six innings, used a huge 12 run seventh inning to finish with the lop sided win. Schreiber had an almost perfect game at the plate, batting 4 for 5 with five RBIs and scoring once, Borofka added a 3 for 4 performance with a trio of RBIs coming from a triple in that big seventh inning, and she came home three times, Lexi DeLong went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a pair of runs while Johnson crossed the plate three times. Olson earned her first varsity win, allowing five hits with 5 strikeouts and just one walk in the seven innings.

“The entire lineup found ways to get on base and we were able to get them around to score in this game,” Elk Mound coach Dylan Pronschinske said. “Ten different girls scored runs in the game.”
