EM finishes 1-2 on ball diamond

Starting the week with an extra inning game isn’t the best thing to do when you have a young pitching staff and you have three games in five days. (A fourth game was postponed Thursday due to bad weather). But the Elk Mound baseball team went 11 innings at Spring Valley Monday, May 5, dropping a heartbreaker 3-2, then traveled to Bloomer Friday and blasted the Blackhawks 11-1 before losing a Saturday game to Eau Claire Regis at Bollinger Field 10-0.

Spring Valley

After taking a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Mounders allowed the Cardinals to score twice in their half of the inning. It remained 2-1 until the sixth when the Mounders knotted it up and neither team could put a run across until the Cardinals came up with the winning run in the 11th inning.

Brandon Bohl pitched a gem, giving up two runs in eight innings on four hits with seven strikeouts  and three walks. Hunter Kohls came in for two innings and held Spring Valley scoreless and freshman Dane Lew took the loss as he gave up the third run. The Mounder offense didn’t help their pitchers a whole lot as they came up with just four hits including one by Lew who had an RBI with it.

Bohl was almost untouchable as he gave up only five hits while whiffing 12 Blackhawks and didn’t walk a batter in the six inning contest. The Mounders scored in bunches, coming up with five in the third inning, four in the fourth and a couple more to top things off in the sixth.

Cole Tyman knocked in three runs, batting 2 for 2 in the game with a double, Alex Hollister was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Jon Storing banged a two base hit for an RBI and scored twice.

The bats may have been on fire in the Bloomer game but they were silenced against the Ramblers with Grant Kjellberg coming up with the lone hit of the game for the Mounders. After falling behind 3-0, Elk Mound kept themselves in the game by holding Regis scoreless for two innings but the Ramblers tacked on runs in the next two innings to end the game early. Trey Mohr gave up 10 hits and nine runs from the mound with one strikeout and one walk to absorb the loss.
