PLUM CITY — Managing to squeeze in a game with snow and cold weather hitting the area last week, the Colfax baseball team traveled to Plum City April 14 and pounded the Plum City Blue Devils 14-5 to remain undefeated for the season at 2-0. A home game scheduled against Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran April 15 was cancelled and with some more wet weather on Wednesday, the Thursday home game against St. Croix Central was changed to a double header at Central May 12.
The Vikings started off with a bang at Plum City. Scoring three runs in the first inning, clean up hitter Sawyer DeMoe slammed his first starter of the season bringing Nate Liebfried and Ethin Kiekhafer in ahead of him. The lead didn’t last long however as Plum City came up with four runs in their half of the inning which included six base hits off Colfax starter Logan Mittelstadt. That was all Mittelstadt gave up however as he pitched two innings of scoreless ball before turning over the mound duties to DeMoe who gave up just the single run in the fifth.
Meanwhile, the Vikings were smacking the ball all over the field as they used doubles by Mittelstadt, Kiekhafer, DeMoe and Jacob Steinke to bring in 11 more runs in the next six innings to finish off the rout.
Kiekhafer finished the day 2 for 2 in the hitting department with a couple of walks and crossed the plate four times, while Steinke was 2 for 3, scoring twice, and Mittelstadt and DeMoe were both 2 for 5 as they also scored a pair of runs each. Mittelstadt earned the win, allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks while the only run Demoe gave up came without a Plum City hit as he struck out four batters and walked two.
