Colfax FFA members receive awards at annual banquet

COLFAX — Under new leadership with John Nelson taking over the agriculture teaching position and FFA advisor for Colfax High School this year, members of  the FFA received awards and presented them during the yearly banquet April 3 in the high school cafeteria.

Officers this year are Abby Stone, president, Heidi Lieffort, vice president, Ben Christianson, treasurer, Lexi Albricht, secretary, Rhett Kragness, reporter, Troy Bird, reporter, Peter Lyrek, sentinel and Tyler Knutson, parliamentarian. Officers recognized several guests including school administrators Bill Yingst and Trevor Hovde along with yours truly from The Messenger, school board member Jodi Kiekhafer, Jason Benson from Lindstrom Equipment and former ag teacher and FFA advisor Tom Millar. Thomas Olson, state FFA president from Menomonie also addressed the crowd of over 90 people.

Members who completed one year in the organization received the Greenhand award including: Bird, Bryce Kragness, Brielle Bjork, Brad Foyt, Haley McCoy, Brandy Mouledoux, Erin Nellessen, Brooke Ponto, Carley Richardson, Abby Schotter, Abby Suvada, Tucker Teige, Jezzicka Tweed, Tiernee Knutson, Nikki Sorenson, Joe Verdon and Eden Logslett.

Completing their second year and receiving the Chapter FFA Degree were Christianson, Dakota Homann, Hunter Lieffort, Jack Halverson, Jared Taylor, Katie Edwards, Kristi Hagen, Riley Rice, Ross Taylor, Sarah Scharlau and Scot Schmock. Completing more then two years were Stone, Ben Sikora, Brett Johnson, Colton Breezee, Devon Rice, Dom Sand, Dylan Rice, Elizabeth Harbek, Haley Flug, Heidi Lieffort, Jared Longdo, Jesse Dicks, Albricht, Nolan Prince, Lyrek, Rachel Sykora, R. Kragness, Sawyer Suvada, Knutson and William Michaels.

Other awards presented were:

• World Dairy Expo-16th place of 130 schools with Suvada, Bjork and J. Taylor.

• Leadership workshops: Stone, Bird, Lyrek, Albricht.

• Tri-County Soil Judging: second place team. S. Suvada, second of 77 individuals, Michaels, fifth, Heidi Lieffort, sixth, Homann, 13th.

• National Convention attendees: Stone, Harbek, Edwards, McCoy, S. Suvada, Lyrek, Breezee.

• District Speaking Contest: Heidi Lieffort, Tweed, Stone, J. Taylor, Christianson, Bird, Schotter, R. Kragness.

• Half Time Leadership: Schmock, Christianson.

• UW-River Falls Ag-Tech Contest: (Middle School Agriscience) Jack Edwards, Mikaela Liebfried, Cole Hill. (Ag Mechanics) S. Suvada, Homann. (Wildlife) Hunter Lieffort, R. Taylor. (Horse) Tweed, Schotter. (Livestock Judging) Heidi Lieffort, R.Kragness, Christianson, B. Kragness. (Dairy Evaluation) Ben Sikora, J. Taylor, Bjork, A. Suvada.

• Bowling: Flug, top female score, Johnson, top male scorer

• Top fruit sales: Lyrek, first, Sykora, second, Schmock, third.

• Star Chapter FFA Degrees:  Heidi Lieffort, Agriscience, R. Kragness. Farmer, Tweed Star Greenhand.

• DeKalb Leadership: Stone

• Honorary Chapter FFA Degree presented by alumni member Steve Ackerlund: Lindstom Equipment for Business, Millar for individual.

• Alumni Scholarships: Stone, $400, R. Kragness, $400, college senior Sophia Secraw, $400.

• Larry Osterberg Award: Joel Hilson.

The banquet concluded with officers recognizing and thanking their parents for all their help during the many years of involvement with the FFA.
