Colfax track team competes in Blue Devil Open

MENOMONIE — Feeling awful glad there are indoor track facilities close by, the Colfax girls track and field team placed 11th out of 20 teams while the boys were 15th out of 22 teams in the Blue Devil Invite held at Johnson Field House on the UW-Stout campus March 25. Teams competing were from all three divisions in Wisconsin along with one Minnesota team.

Scoring team points by placing in the top eight spots for the girls were Heidi Lieffort in second place in the pole vault at 9-00 as she matched the winning height of an Eau Claire Memorial competitor but was second due to more misses. Dempsey Fogarty took third in the 400m run at 1:04.20 and eighth in the long jump with a leap of 14-00, Dannielle Dachel placed sixth in the 800m run with a time of 2:39.47 and Courtney Dressel was seventh in the 3200m run at 13:41.

Leiffort finished tenth in the high jump at 4-03 while Dachel was 14th in the triple jump at 28-08. Speedster Noah Pretasky was the only Viking to score points for the boys as he placed third in the 55m dash at 6.75 (one spot ahead of conference rival Isaac Tuttle of Glenwood City) and taking fourth in the 200m dash at 24.64.

Also competing were Hunter Lieffort (12th  pole vault, 9-00 and 23rd 1600m run, 5:30.78), Ben Kragness (13th shot put, 40-11.50), Andrew Adix (15th long jump, 17-04), the 4 X 200 relay team with Jelani Smit, Kamdon Quast, Andrew Adix and Aliymu Davis (16th, 1:48.91),  Davis (22nd 200m dash, 26.75 and 26th long jump, 16-02) and Tucker Tiege (24th 400m dash, 1:02.77).

“Overall for our first meet of the year, we could not have been happier with how we performed,” Colfax girls coach Ryan Krall (also speaking on behalf of boys coach Jamie Buchholz) said. “We competed against schools that are significantly larger then us including a lot of Big Rivers Conference schools, but we proved that our elite athletes are able to compete with any of them. What pleased me the most was the fact that our younger and newer athletes did not look intimidated by the strong competition. There was obviously some “first meet jitters” as some of our kids were competing in their first varsity meet but they looked the challenge in the face and rose to the occasion. I’m lucky to have a bunch of kids like this to coach,” he added.
