BOYCEVILLE — The Elk Mound girls didn’t let the loss to Colfax earlier in the week stick in their craw too long as they traveled to Boyceville and earned a Valentine’s Day treat with a come from behind 36-35 win over the Bulldogs. It was the Mounders second win over Boyceville this year and they are now 8-5 in the conference while Boyceville is 6-6.
Down by three after a quarter of play at 10-7, the Mounders were in single digit scoring again in the second quarter as Kami King came up with five points on a deuce and a triple while Sarah Winchester hit two free throws and McKenna McVey added one, leaving them behind 21-15 at the intermission.
McVey went to work in the third quarter and connected from close range three times, Elizabeth Fasbender knocked down a trio of free tosses and Winchester dropped in a deuce while the defense took control and held Boyceville to six points to cut the deficit to a single point at 27-26 heading into the final eight minutes. Elk Mound pulled ahead 34-30 before the Bulldogs’ Lexi Peterson hit her fourth triple of the game to cut the lead to one and although Elk Mound had been struggling at the free throw line all night, Fasbender picked a good time to come up with a couple of big freebies for a 36-33 lead with 24 seconds left in the game. The Mounders played tight defense on Boyceville’s final possession, but a potential tying three point attempt on their part missed the mark, resulting in a two point put back as time expired to allow Elk Mound to hang on for the one point win.
“It was a great win for our team and I think we showed a lot of heart,” Elk Mound coach Jordan Kongshaug said, “We hope to keep our momentum going this week,” he added.
McVey led the Mounders with 13 points to go along with 10 from Fasbender. Elk Mound was 9 for 23 at the charity stripe while Boyceville, led by 14 points from Abbey Bird, was 6 for 14 from the line.
