ELLSWORTH — Competing a little short handed, the Bloomer-Colfax wrestling team finished fifth in the six team regional held Feb. 15 at Ellsworth. Colfax wrestler, sophomore Brady Simonson, after winning the regional as a freshman, placed second and will wrestle this Saturday at Amery in the sectional meet. Simonson was the only B-C grappler to place first or second to qualify for sectionals. Ellsworth ran away with the team competition scoring 348.5 points.
Simonson, with a record of 35-8, scored 18 team points at 126 pounds as he received a first round bye, then won 4-0 over his Prescott opponent and lost the championship match by a technical fall to Jens Lantz of Ellsworth who has a record of 17-2.
B-C did not have a wrestler at several of the weights as 113 pounder Tucker Hovde was one-tenth of a pound over the weight limit and couldn’t compete, and Matt Shaw, Stephan Snyder and Brennan Arbuckle all suffered injuries in the last two weeks. Placing third for the team were Justin Wachtendonk and Jacob Malinowski, fourth places were earned by Jared Kressin, Collin Bungartz and Cole Anderson Olson, and Jon Hayton, Zack Arvold and Lassi Karpi all finished sixth. Anderson-Olson won his first match with a pin then lost the next two and scored 11 team points.
“We are in a tough Division 2 regional,” B-C coach Jim Poirer said. “Ellsworth is one of the top teams in the division and they have a lot of depth. Not having any of our heavier weights able to compete really hurts in the team standings. But we have a young team and we allowed a lot of different kids to compete this year to give them some experience. Brady continues to wrestle tough and should have a good chance to get through the sectional with the top three wrestlers moving on to state,” he added.
