BC wrestlers finish fifth in Heart O’ North Conference meet

They didn’t have any conference champions but the Bloomer-Colfax wrestling team had 11 of their 12 competitors score team points and they finished a respectable fifth out of nine teams in the Heart O’North Conference meet held Feb. 8 at Northwestern High School.

106 pounder Justin Wachtendonk was the runner up, scoring 18 team points as he lost the championship match by a pin in 1:58 against a Barron opponent. Brady Simonson, after winning a conference title a year ago, placed third at 126 pounds and also scored 18 team points. Simonson won his first match by a fall, lost 10-2 in the next round, won by another pin to get into the third place match and defeated his Northwestern opponent by a pin at 2:46.

Fourth place was earned by Jacob Malinowski (120 pounds, 13 points) who won his opening match by a major decision, lost by a pin in the next round, won by a fall to get into the third place match and lost 7-5 against Barron. Also taking fourth was Dan Thorgerson (152, nine points), after losing by a pin, then winning his next two matches and dropping his final match 4-2 against Hayward. Brady Chance (285,14 points) was also fourth after winning his first match with a pin, losing his second via a pin, winning the next round also by a pin then losing to his Spooner opponent by a pin.

Tucker Hovde (113, seven points) was one of four B-C grapplers to place fifth as he lost by a technical fall, received a bye, lost again by a pin and won by an injury default over a Barron opponent. Jon Hayton (145, 10 points), lost his first round match by a pin, came back to pin his next opponent, lost again by a fall and took the fifth place match by sticking his Hayward opponent in 1:48. Cole Anderson-Olson (160, eight points), dropped his first match by a fall, won 4-1 over a Cumberland wrestler, lost by a major decision then took fifth with a pin at 3:16 against Northwestern. Lassi Karpi (170, eight points) lost by a fall, won by a decision, lost by a pin again then put his Barron opponent to the mat in 4:35 for another fifth place.

Finishing sixth for B-C was Matt Shaw (182, six points) with all four matches being won or lost by pins as he dropped the first one, won the second and lost the next two, the final one against Chetek-Weyerhauser-Prairie Farm. And also taking sixth was Trevor Newton (138, seven points) who managed to win his first match but dropped the next three, the final by a forfeit. Jarrod Kressin (132) lost two matches and did not score any team points. B-C will begin WIAA tournament competition with regionals this Saturday at Ellsworth.
