Colfax boys prepare for busy week after win over Elmwood

ELMWOOD — After beating the Elmwood Raiders by 18 points back in December, the Colfax boys’ basketball team made sure they took care of business again by soundly defeating them 57-33 in Elmwood Jan. 30. Colfax will have four games this week, starting with a make up at Flambeau on Monday, a home game against St. Croix Central Tuesday, another make up game Thursday at home against Spring Valley (game time for varsity 5:55, junior varsity to follow in Martin Anderson gym.  This is a double header with the girls playing Mondovi at 7:30), and yet another home game against Glenwood City Friday night.

Led by a triple and a pair of free throws from Ethin Kiehafer, a trey by both Jeremiah Wait and Jared Rudi along with a Sawyer DeMoe deuce, the Vikings held a 13-7 advantage over the Raiders who are all alone at the bottom of the Dunn-St. Croix standings at 0-10. Grant Phillips joined the scoring column in the second quarter for Colfax with four of the team’s 12 points, all on free throws, for a 25-13 halftime lead.

Ben Kragness scored all four of his points in the game in the third stanza on a couple of free tosses and a deuce to help the Vikings take a 38-25 lead into the final quarter and they broke loose for 19 points while holding the Raiders to single digit scoring with eight to finish with the 24 point win.

DeMoe finished with 18 points for the Vikings with Kiekhafer adding 13 and Phillips 12. The team was 15 for 18 from the foul line while Elmwood was 10 for 14 with all of those coming from their leading scorer Levi Wolf. Colfax made 4 of 19 three pointers but the Raiders were not any better as they connected on 1 of 15. Kiekhafer and Wait both came up with five assists and Kragness collected nine rebounds.

“Jared Rudi did a great job defensively against Wolf, holding him to 1 of 12 shooting from the field,” Colfax coach Garrett Maas said. “We are still looking for some other players to step up offensively, especially with the number of games we have coming up,” he added.
